Peter Ebertz Obituary

After a long battle with cancer, Peter John Ebertz joined our Lord in Heaven on May 22nd, 2022, surrounded by loving prayers and hymns from his children, and siblings.
Peter (Pete) was born October 26, 1959, in Jamestown, ND, the son of Johnny and Glory Ebertz.
He was born and raised in Jamestown and graduated from Jamestown High in 1977. Pete did various jobs growing up including working for the Jamestown Sun Newspaper, his father’s Ekonomy Cleaners and Laundry, the Jamestown Airport Authority, and was a section worker on the BN Railroad. Pete attended the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks to study Chemical Engineering, joined a band, worked as a “roughneck” in the oil fields of Oklahoma and ultimately left college to pursue a career in the Army National Guard.  Peter enlisted in the ND National Guard in 1980 and completed Officer Candidate School in 1985. In 1987 he became a full time AGR in the Alaskan National Guard and was honorably discharged in 2004 with the rank of Master Sergeant.  During his service he conducted 2 special training periods in South Korea and received awards in “Global War on Terrorism” and “Excellence in
Rifle and Pistol” competition.

He enjoyed the great outdoors, shooting at the range, listening to rock music, and helping those in need. His great Alaska adventures included climbing mountains, kayaking through river passes, going on hunting trips with friends in service and fishing for wild salmon.
After Pete was honorably discharged from the Army National Guard, he took up various jobs, “Pete’s Painting” and specifically ones that he knew would help people. In his home in Bethel, Alaska, he worked for the Tundra Center as a probation officer for adults, then moved on to be a supervisor for the biomedical engineer department for the Yukon Kuskokwim Health Corporation. At the end of Pete's working career, he was the supervisor at the local courthouse Guard post for Guardian Security and retired in 2021.
Pete created and managed “The Oxford Place”, a second chance home for adult men at risk, right out of his home. It was important for Pete to give back to others and having a transition home like that, was exactly what he envisioned the community of Bethel deserved. It allowed individuals to retain employment, pay their own rent and be productive members of society without being treated like criminals. Pete kept in contact with various tenants he had who were able to make it through their probations and move on into new, reformed lives. Some of them had considered Pete as a father figure they didn't have, and that was Pete's badge of honor that he wore proudly.
Peter was the actual father of three children, Zackary (Babette White) Allen Ebertz of Kenai, Alaska, Alicia Ritanne (Kyle) Mortenson of Wasilla, Alaska, and Mitchell Garrett (Clara Cranor) Ebertz of Fort Richard, Vermont.  Pete loved and treasured each of his children. He enjoyed playing cribbage with his son Zackary, watching “rom coms” with his daughter Alicia, fixing cars with his son Mitchell…and yes, Pete was a “Star Wars” geek.
Pete was a member of Ducks Unlimited in Bethel, Alaska, and local LIONS Club in Bethel, Alaska from 1998 to 2022.  Pete was most recently awarded the Lion Tamer role. In this role, Pete was able to find and recruit members within the Bethel Community into the club where they often held many charity events. He was also a part of the Elks club and volunteered for the fire department in as an EMT.  Peter was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic parish in Bethel and Sacred Heart Church in Wasilla.
He is survived by his three children, 6 siblings Beth (Keith) Herner (Puyallup, WA), Chris (Yvonne) Ebertz (Bismarck, ND) Ann Ebertz-Johnson (St. Michael, MN) Paul (Veronica) Ebertz (Phoenix, AZ)  Patrick Ebertz (St. Cloud, MN) Dr. Michael (Donna) Ebertz (Orono, MN)  plus many wonderful nieces and nephews and Great nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Johnny and Glory Ebertz, grandparents, Tony and Magdalena Ebertz, Theresa and Ben Miller, Uncle, Rev. Charles Richard Rudd, Uncles and Aunts  Joe and Millie Ebertz, Tony and Jean Ebertz, Don and Anna Mae Weiler,  Marie Clapp  and Godfather, John Kroff.
