Obituary

Marilyn Burkhardt passed away peacefully at her home one day short of her 95th birthday. She was born April 5, 1928 in Marion, North Dakota to Albert and Lillian Inga Lee Monson. Marilyn met Robert Burkhardt upon his return from active service. They were married September 1, 1949 and raised three sons.

Marilyn was a caring, compassionate woman of God. She dedicated much of her life to supporting those around her both spiritually and physically. Marilyn spent time in retirement volunteering at Moorhead Healthcare, offering support to those in need by driving patients to appointments and playing piano. She was a deaconess at First Baptist church, sharing her gifts on the worship team and investing time with the children of AWANA.

One of 13 siblings, Marilyn graduated from Marion High School and went on to receive her RN from St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing/Moorhead State University in 1948. She was a trailblazer of opportunity and equality for her time. Her career as a caregiver included time at Jamestown Hospital (ND) as a nurse in pediatrics, a private duty nurse in Tempe (AZ), the ambulance service at Fairmont Community Hospital (MN), and in various capacities at Riverview Hospital Crookston (MN).

Marilyn also attended The Salvation Army training college in Chicago, IL obtaining her degree in theology.  She and Bob became Salvation Army Captains and were stationed in Thief River Falls, Virginia, and Fairmont, MN. Marilyn provided spiritual support to those in need, performing marriages, funerals, and teaching the Bible. Music was a great joy to Marilyn.  She shared this love through worship by singing, in addition to other instruments.

Marilyn is survived by her three sons, Richard (Kay), James, Jon (Kathy); six grandchildren, Aaron (Liz), Ashton Sager (Jerry), Ali Carlson (Doug), Elke Bangerter (Kyle), Nicole Kelly (Cameron), and Jared Purdy (Mari). She will also be missed by siblings, Arlyce, Lois, Juliane, Edward, Lorne, Rod, Dale.

She is preceded in death by her loving husband, Robert; father, Albert and mother, Lillian; and siblings, Noelyn, Neldae, Allen, Lowell, and Wayne.

In lieu of flowers the family is asking that memorials be made to McCoy Ministries or

The Salvation Army.
