Walter E. Brandenburg

July 31, 1915 — July 12, 2011

Walter E. Brandenburg, 95, of Edgeley, ND, died July 12, 2011, at Jamestown Hospital in Jamestown, surrounded by his loving family.

Walter E. Brandenburg was born July 31, 1915, in Deisem, ND, the son of Herman and Edith (Stibbie) Brandenburg. He was raised on the family farm and attended Ray Township School #1. After his schooling, he worked on the family farm, and later owned his own trucking business. On December 20, 1941, he married Bernadetta "Bernie" Hurley at the Catholic Church in Verona, ND. Wally and Bernie purchased land in Ray Township in 1945. They built new buildings on that farm site and lived there for 40 years, retiring from farming in 1979. In December of 1985, they moved from the farm into the town of Edgeley in a new home, where they lived until their recent move to the Manor St. Joseph the end of May.

Wally was a member of the Ray Township School Board, the LaMoure County School Board, the Farmers Union Oil Board, the Manor St. Joseph Board, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Wally was a strong, resourceful, hard-working man of many talents. He had a good sense of humor and even at the Manor enjoying "kidding around" with the nurses. His love for his family and attending family gatherings were a top priority in his life. He took pride in maintaining their farm and house in town. Even at age 95, Wally enjoyed mowing and keeping the lawn at its best. His other interests were playing cards and fishing. Wally loved to "shoot the moon" in cards and kept his "card partner" on their toes. He also had numerous fishing stories, especially of trips to Waterhen, Canada, in his earlier days.

Wally is survived by his wife, Bernie, who would have celebrated 70 years of marriage with this coming December. Also surviving Wally are 2 daughters: Colleen (Jim) Gaikowski, Andover, MN; Gail (Jay) Snustad, Bismarck, ND; 5 Grandchildren: Carmen (Steve) Krumenauer, Otsego, MN, Jim Gaikowski, Jr., Otsego, MN, Patrice Snustad (Adam DeRosier, fiancé), Brooklyn Park, MN, Kari Snustad, Bismarck, ND, and Joe (Brittany) Snustad, Grand Forks, ND; 5 Great Grandchildren: Alex, Jake, and Carlie Krumenauer, and Kayden and Sophia Snustad. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Edith Brandenburg, 4 brothers; Emil, Leonard, Art (Swede), and Bill, and two sisters, Pearl Flegel, and Evelyn "Dolly" Taszarek.
