Verna Mae Leno, age 98, passed away peacefully on July 10, 2025. She was born on June 18, 1927, in Arena, North Dakota, the only child of Christ and Rose (Merkel) Wetzel.
Verna attended elementary school in Arena and graduated from Wing High School in 1945. She was the last surviving member of her graduating class. She continued her education at Dickinson State Teachers College and later returned to her hometown to teach at the Arena school for several years.
On September 11, 1949, Verna married Fred Leno at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Arena. The couple made their home in the Arena and Wing area until 1968, when they moved to Medina. There, Verna worked at Borth’s Store and was a devoted member of English Lutheran Church.
After Fred’s passing in 1983, Verna relocated to Jamestown, where she cleaned homes for a living and became an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. At Immanuel, she faithfully served on the church council and participated in various committees.
Verna is survived by her two sons: Marlon (Julie) Leno of Billings, Montana, and Monte (Carol) Leno of Jamestown, North Dakota. She also leaves behind three beloved grandchildren: Stephanie (Todd) Hilling of Billings, Christopher (John Hernandez) Leno of Livermore, California, and Rhiannon Leno of Fargo, North Dakota; as well as two treasured great-grandchildren, Lily and Lori Gushwa.
Verna had a heart for service and a deep love for her family. Known for her exceptional cooking and spotless home, she especially delighted her grandchildren and great-grandchildren with her homemade strudels and kuchen (special bread). She found joy in reading, traveling, and spending time with those she loved.
Verna’s legacy is one of faith, devotion, and warmth. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
No services are planned at this time.
Verna will be interred next to her husband at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Bismarck, North Dakota.
