Richard Lewis Hamkens was born on January 31, 1939 at a farm near Courteney, ND. He went to Fried Township country school and then graduated from St, John's Academy, Jamestown in 1957. After high school he enlisted in the Air Force and was stationed in Texas, Mississippi, Dickinson, ND, Rapid City, SD and Frobisher Bay, Canada.
After the Air Force, he worked the family farm near Fried, ND and had many great years with the Madsen farm. After retirement, he could devote more time to his true passion, fishing. It didn't matter if it was summer or winter, he always knew where to find them and kept his family well stocked with fish!
Rich had a deep faith that he demonstrated through years of service to Sacred Heart Parish in Fried and later St James Basilica.
He is preceded in death by his father Bernard (Ben), mother Louise, sister RoseAnne and two brothers-in-law Jerry Klose and Emil Jakubic. He is survived by his sisters Monica Klose, Margaret (Dennis) Lonski, Roberta “Bobbie” (Donald) Shields, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is also survived by many close friends he considered family.
Many special thanks to his cousins, Mike and Salome Koushkouski, for their loyal support, help, and care over the years.
