Marvin Solien, 89, Jamestown, North Dakota died Thursday, November 15, 2007 at Central Dakota Village in Jamestown.
Marvin was born October 27, 1918 in Minot, North Dakota, the son of Marvin and Olga (Stevens) Solien. At the age of four, Marvin moved with his family to Jamestown. He graduated from Jamestown High School in 1936 and from the the University of North Dakota in 1940. Marvin entered the US Army on July 16, 1941 at Ft. Snelling, MN. He was a member of the last cavalry unit in the United States Army before it was disbanded and became the Armored Infantry. He served in the Eurpeon Theater of Operations in WWII in France, Germany and Austria. He was honorably discharged from the service on November 1, 1945. He returned to Jamestown where he owned and operated Solien's Men's Store, and later Dee Jays. He married Gayle Smith Ramsey on February 5, 1959 at the Grace Episcopal Church, Jamestown.
Marvin was a member of the Elks, Eagles, V.F.W., American Legion, and the First United Methodist Church, all of Jamestown. Marvin served on the Alfred E. Dickey Library board and was President of Sigma Chi Fraternity at the University of North Dakota for two years.
Marvin is survived by two sons, James, (Linda) of Minneapolis, Minnesota and William Ramsey (Anita) of Lady Lake, Florida; two daughters, Letitia (Dr. Larry) Johnson and Elaine (Joseph) Hegland, both of Jamestown; eight grandchildren; Emilie Lintner, Captain Larry Edward Johnson, Jr., Thomas Johnson, Katherne Johnson, Dr. Douglas Ransey, Daniel Ramsey, David Hegland, Leah Pettit; and one great-grandchild, James Lintner. He is also survived by a brother, Robert, of Lady Lake, Florida and Mary Lou Mullenbach of Tucson, Arizona.
He was preceded in death by his wife; a daughter, Mary Ramsey; his parents; and two sisters, Kay Smith and Elizabeth Groth.
Memorial Service: 2:30 PM, Saturday, November 24, 2007 at the First United Methodist Church, Jamestown, ND.
Burial: Highland Home Cemetery, Jamestown, North Dakota.
