Marvin Schwartz, formerly of Edgeley, passed away on Saturday, November 12, 2005 at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center in Bismarck, ND. Death was due to cancer and Shy-Drager syndrome. He was 80 years old.
Marvin Arthur Schwartz was born May 10, 1925 at a farm on the shore of Coldwater Lake in McIntosh County, North Dakota. His parents were Eduard and Rachel (Flegel) Schwartz. He received his education in rural schools and then worked as a farmhand. In December, 1943 he was called to active duty with the US Navy. He trained at Farragut Naval Station in Idaho and at San Diego. His shipboard duties took him around the world.
He was discharged from the Navy in May, 1946, with the rank of Seaman 1st Class. He came to Edgeley where he worked as a truck driver and later as a buttermaker for the Edgeley Cooperative Creamery. He married Veronica Marie (Verna Mae) Long on September 5, 1949 at the Church of the Transfiguration in Edgeley.
When the Edgeley Creamery ceased operations, Marvin worked briefly as the driver for the South Central Area Library bookmobile, until taking a position as a groundman with James Valley REC. Later her earned both his Class B and his Journey's electrician licenses.
Marvin retired from James Valley in 1987 with 20 years of service. He was the principal caregiver for his invalid wife until her death in April of 1997. His own health began failing shortly thereafter. In January, 2000, he became a resident of Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center.
Marvin was a member of the American Legion, the Veteran's of Foreign Wars, and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed visiting with friends and relatives, drives in the country, auction sales, steam threshing bees, and watching TV. He will be remembered as a loyal husband, a kind father, and a good worker.
Survivors include two daughters; Dr. Anne Schwartz of Burnsville, MN, and Gretchen (Charles) Joyce of Bismarck; a sister, Esther Wolff of Ellendale; a brother, Harry Schwartz of Rapid City, SD; and two granddaughters, Lindsey Joyce and Heather Joyce, both of Fargo. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.
Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 16, 2005 at Transfiguration Catholic Church, Edgeley, ND.
Prayer Service: 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 15, 2005 at Transfiguration Catholic Church, Edgeley, ND.
Visitation: 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Lisko Funeral Chapel, Edgeley and 1 hour prior to services in the church on Wednesday.
