Lyle Meeker

August 2, 1929 — July 26, 2016

Lyle Herbert Meeker, 86, passed away on Tuesday, July 26, 2016 surrounded by his loved ones one week shy of his 87th birthday. Born on August 2, 1929 to his loving parents, Lyle was raised in the Jamestown area attending school in Homer Township and Jamestown High School. Upon graduation, Lyle went to work for Becks Clothing. He married the love of his life, Viona (Guthmiller) on July 15, 1950. Afterward, Lyle was drafted into the US Army serving in Korea until his honorable discharge in 1953. Upon returning home from the military, Lyle continued to work for Becks Clothing (later purchased by Straus Clothing) where he worked until retirement. Lyle loved his job and always wanted to ensure his customers had the best shopping experience.
Outside of work, Lyle was an active member within his church, First Congregational UCC in addition to Boy Scouts, and Lions Club. Lyle was incredibly social, sharing his gift of conversation wherever he went. Oftentimes this included daily walks downtown to the coffee shop to keep up with the latest Jamestown happenings. Lyle also enjoyed collecting coins, tinkering in the garage, and spending time with family. He was so proud of his grandchildren and great grandchildren, making sure he could enjoy as many of their activities as possible.
Lyle is survived by his loving wife of 66 years Viona; his daughters Kathy (Jeff) Grinsteiner, Jamestown, ND and Karen (Doug) Reade, Sioux Falls, SD; 4 grandchildren Chad (Heather) Grinsteiner, Dawn (Ryan) Altringer, Nathan (Emily) Reade, and Jackie Reade; 4 great grandchildren Afton and Harper Grinsteiner and Addison and Claire Reade. Lyle was preceded in death by his son Larry Meeker; his parents Arden and Virginia Meeker; and two brothers Arthur Glenn and Donald.
