Leona Backer, 89 of Jamestown, ND died at Hi-Acres Manor Nursing Center, Jamestown, ND on Saturday, March 24, 2007.
Leona Rose Packzowski was born on June 16, 1917 on the family farm near Kensal, ND the daughter of Stanley and Mary (Kulla) Packzowski. She was raised on the farm and attended Nogosek Township School. Leona and Elmer ‘Dick' Backer were married on November 17, 1937 at St. John's Catholic Church, Kensal, ND. Following their marriage they farmed near Wimbledon and later purchased a farm near Courtenay, ND. Dick died on August 6, 1970. Leona continued to live on the farm until she moved into Jamestown in 1980.
Survivors include 2 daughters, Diane (Roger) Hoggarth, Bismarck, ND and Glenda Backer, Minneapolis, MN; 5 sons, Bernard (Teresa), Fargo, ND, Benjamin (Sharla), Castle Rock, CO, Kenneth, Courtenay, ND, Dale (Susan), Courtenay, ND and Elden (Debra) Jamestown, ND; 15 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren; 3 sisters, Louise (Edward) Duerr, Lidgerwood, ND, Grace (Casimer) Marko, Elk Grove, CA and Florence (James) McCracken, Canoga Park, CA; and 3 brothers, Michael (Gerry) Packzowski, Cayuga, ND, Peter (Eleanor) Packzowski, Moorhead, MN and Leo Packzowski, Watertown, SD. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Beverly, sisters Caroline and Birdella and brother, Archie.
Leona was a member of The Basilica Of St. James, Jamestown, ND, St. James Tabernacle Society, the 17'ers and the Corrine Homemakers. She also enjoyed bowling.
Funeral Service: 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 28, 2007 at The Basilica of St. James with Father Al Bitz officiating.
Prayer Service: 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, 2007 at The Basilica.
Visitation: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 27 at Lisko Funeral Chapel, Jamestown and 1 hour prior to services in the church on Wednesday.
Interment: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Jamestown, ND.
