James Schmidt

James Eugene Schmidt, 72, of Jamestown, ND, passed away on May 20th, 2025, surrounded by loving family.

Jim was born December 18, 1952 in Bismarck, ND, the son of Lewis and Donna (Palmer) Schmidt.

Jim attended school in Princeton, MN, then joined the United States Army in 1971, where he worked as a driver in a vehicle maintenance battalion. He was honorably discharged in 1977.

Jim became a father when his son, Travis James, was born in 1975.

He married Joan Kay (Sondag) on May 16th, 1988. They celebrated their 37th anniversary in 2025. Jim gained five step-children when he married Joan: Rodney, Daniel, Steven, Marni, and Becky.

Jim came to ND around 1984 to help his uncle farm near Dawson. He then was employed by the ND State Hospital as a CNA.

Jim especially enjoyed drawing, working on and admiring old cars, maintaining the house and yard, playing card games with family and playing video games. Some of his closest friends were his online gaming buddies.

Jim is survived by his wife, Joan; children, Travis, Rodney, Daniel, Steven, Marni, and Becky; grandchildren, Meadow, Mallory, Dylan, Katie, Caden, Nola, Addie, Anna Love, Kenyen, Evelyn, Hazel, Harrison, and Luke; siblings, Annette, Sharon, and Jerry; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding Jim in death are his parents, Lewis and Donna; and siblings, Walter, Robert, and Sheela.

A Celebration of Life service will be held Tuesday, May 27th, 2025 at 2:00pm at Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown, ND, with Rev. Tom Eckstein officiating.
