Irma C Mathys

July 31, 1925 — December 9, 2015

Irma C. Mathys, 90 of Jamestown ND passed away on Wednesday, December 9, 2015 at the Jamestown Regional Medical Center. Irma was born on July 31, 1925 at Pettibone, ND, the daughter of Edward C. Schmitt and Caroline (Gerard) Schmitt.
Irma graduated from Pettibone High School and graduated from Valley City (ND) State Teachers College. She earned her Master's Degree in education from Eastern Michigan University, located in Ypsilanti, MI. Irma was a life-long teacher, having taught elementary students in Montana, Fessenden, ND, at the Anne Carlsen Center in Jamestown, ND, Yokohama, Japan and Lake View, AR. On June 14, 1955, Irma married US Navy Commander Harry E. Mathys in Yokohama, Japan. Upon returning to the US, Harry and Irma lived in Chicago, IL, Lake View, AR, Panama City Beach, FL and Port St. Joe, FL. Harry passed away on August 19, 1997 and his remains were scattered in the Gulf of Mexico.
Irma returned to North Dakota in 1999, and lived in Jamestown, ND until her death. She enjoyed volunteering at Eventide Nursing Home and delivering meals on wheels.
Irma is survived by her nieces, Jean Morris, Phoenix, AZ and Joan Morris, Jamestown, ND, her nephews, James (Rita) Morris, Jamestown and their daughter, Tara, and Jon (Linda) Morris, Boise, ID and their sons, Micheal, Andrew (Brenda) and their son Micheal, and Griffin. Irma is preceded in death by her husband Harry, her parents, her sister Marion Jean Morris, her brother-in-law James Morris, Sr., her niece Janet Morris and her brother Robert Gerard Schmitt. Robert is Missing In Action from the Korean War.
At Irma's request no funeral service is planned. Irma's ashes will be laid to rest in the spring at Highland Home Cemetery, between her parents and by the grave reserved for her beloved brother, Bobby.
