Harold Schlaht

July 17, 1923 — May 8, 2005

Harold ""Chubby"" Schlaht, 81, Jamestown, North Dakota died Sunday, May 8, 2005 at Jamestown Hospital in Jamestown.

Harold was born July 17, 1923 near Cleveland, North Dakota the son of Christ and Pauline (Lautt) Schlaht. He attended elementary school in Cleveland. The family moved to Jamestown where Harold graduated from high school. He attended Lincoln College to study aviation. He returned to North Dakota and helped his parents farm near Jamestown. He was inducted into the US Army Air Force on November 23, 1945 at Ft. Snelling, MN. He served his country during WW II and was discharged on August 1, 1946. Upon his return to Jamestown he worked for M & H. On March 23, 1948 Harold married Artena Lang in Jamestown. He worked for 38 years as the body shop foreman for R.M. Stoudt in Jamestown.

Chubby was an extremely sincere, dedicated individual who loved kids and enjoyed watching them play baseball. He had a career that spanned 42 years as a player, manager, umpire and coach for Post 14. He was an active director of the baseball program which included everything from fundraising to actual supervision of the teams on the field. He was inducted into the North Dakota American Legion Baseball Hall of Fame in 1981.

Chubby is survived by his wife, Artena of Jamestown, two daughters, Schelly Schlaht, Jamestown and Paulette (Sam) Pillus, Rohnert Park, CA, one sister, Delores (Clarence) Spitzer, Jamestown and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother and sister-in-law, Wilbert and Harriet Schlaht.

Funeral Service: 10:30 AM, Thursday, May 12, 2005 at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Jamestown with Pastor Barbara Murray officiating.

Visitation: 1:00 to 8:00 PM, Wednesday, May 11, 2005 at the Eddy Funeral Home.

Burial: Highland Home Cemetery, Jamestown, North Dakota.
