Harold R. Kurtz, 93, of Sioux Falls and formerly of Edgeley, ND, passed away Tuesday, July 26, 2011, at the Sanford Medical Center, Sioux Falls, SD.
Harold was born on January 6, 1918, in Fredonia, ND, to William and Elsie (Gutschmidt) Kurtz. He grew up in Fredonia, ND, and attended country schools in LaMoure County. In 1942, he served in the United States Army during WWII as a driver and chemical technician. He was honorably discharged in 1945 with the rank of Sergeant.
Harold was united in marriage with Alyce Schardin on June 6, 1947. To this union, the couple was blessed with two children, Claudette and Gregory. Harold took exams and did wiring and electrical work for 25 years, retiring at the age of 65. Harold was a member of Zion Lutheran Church where he was a chairman and ushered. He was also active in the Civilian Conservation Corps, Lion's Club and the VFW.
Those left to cherish Harold's memory are his wife Alyce, Sioux Falls, SD; daughter Claudette Williams and her husband Jerome, Lenexa, KS; son Greg Kurtz, Sioux Falls, SD; sister Selma Moench, Jamestown, ND; 4 grandchildren, Eric, Jesse, Jason, Jaclyn; 3 great-grandchildren, Gavin, Madeline, Jonas; and many other relatives and friends.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents; 3 brothers, Ted, Albert, Lawrence; and a sister, Violet Wegenast.
Funeral Service: 1:00 pm, Monday, August 1, 2011, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Edgeley, ND.
Visitation: 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, Sunday, July 31, 2011 at Williams-Lisko Funeral Chapel, Edgeley
Prayer Service: 7:00 pm, Sunday, July 31, 2011 at Williams-Lisko Funeral Chapel, Edgeley.
Burial: Mt. Hope Cemetery, Edgeley, ND.
