Elmer Retzer, 82, Bismarck, ND, formerly of Cleveland, ND went to be with his Heavenly Father on Sunday, September 1, 2013 at St. Gabriel's Community Nursing Home in Bismarck, surrounded by his loving family.
Elmer was born February 5, 1931 to Carl and Lydia (Geigle) Retzer on the family farm south of Cleveland. He attended rural Cleveland school. Elmer farmed all his life in the Cleveland area. On June 26, 1955 Elmer married Eileen Gehlert in Jamestown. They had one son together, David. Eileen died February 12, 1978. Elmer married Mary Lou Kramlich on February 5, 1982 and from this union twin daughters, Kayleen and Kelsey were born.
Elmer was a part of the Gideons since November 20, 1973. He was elected to the North Dakota Legislature and served five consecutive terms. He enjoyed farming, especially giving his grandchildren rides. There were times the combine and tractor had more hours put on giving rides than field work. He also liked traveling with his family on many occasions. He volunteered at Golden Manor in Steele, ND where he gave sermons and sang for the residents. He also enjoyed singing with his wife at special events around the area.
Elmer is survived by his wife, Mary Lou; son, David (Raisa) Retzer; daughters Kayleen (Zach) Paetz and Kelsey (Dave) Sprenger; four stepsons, DuWayne Nelson, Kevin (Jodi) Nelson, Brent (Junette) Nelson and Troy (Christi) Nelson; stepdaughter, Gail Nelson and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Eileen; a stillborn son; two brothers, Rudolph and Henry and two sisters, Martha and Ellenora.
