DeLaine Tomlin, 87, Jamestown, surrounded by her loving family and under the care of Hospice, passed away on Monday, October 14, 2013 at Ave Maria Village in Jamestown where she had resided since May.
DeLaine was born on January 25, 1926 to Sebastian and LuLu (Heasley) Spangler on the family farm southwest of Eldridge. She grew up and received her education in Lenton Township and graduated from Jamestown High School. She attended Valley City State University and Jamestown College and received her teaching certificate. She then taught in a one-room schoolhouse in Sharlow Township. Other early employments included Jamestown Hospital, CH Carpenter Lumber and North Dakota Farmers Union.
On October 1, 1947, DeLaine married her one true love, Charles Tomlin in Valley City. They farmed in the Jamestown-Eldridge area, later purchasing a farmstead southwest of Eldridge. DeLaine remained active in the farming operation for over sixty years. DeLaine and Chuck were snowbirds for many winters in Mesa, Az., where Chuck passed away on January 13, 1990 after 43 years of marriage. She married a lifetime friend of her and Chuck?s, Roy Sullivan, in Las Vegas, NV in 1993. They were only married a short time before Roy passed away on June 25, 1996.
DeLaine served as past president of the Stutsman County Homemakers and the BPO DOES as well as serving on the Jamestown Public Schools Board of Education and Lenton Township Board. She was active in the North Dakota Republican Women, the North Dakota Stockmen?s Association and the Jewels of the Prairie Red Hat Society. DeLaine was a lifetime member of First United Methodist Church of Jamestown.
In her leisure time, DeLaine enjoyed, first and foremost, spending time with her four grandchildren. She took her grandchildren on many trips and was especially proud of the fact that all of her grandchildren experience transportation by planes, trains, automobiles and a ship. Other hobbies included crocheting, baking, reading, gardening, and entertaining her Sunday night card group. DeLaine especially enjoyed reminiscing with family and friends about the past as she was a great storyteller.
She is survived by one son, Gordon Tomlin (Bev) who live on the family farm and one daughter, Carolyn Tomlin-Cichos (Steve) of Jamestown; four grandchildren ? Heather Tomlin-Rohr (Jason), Nick Cichos (Rachel and her son Jakson), all of Jamestown; Heidi Perleberg (Josh) who live in the original farmhouse of Chuck and DeLaine?s; and Ann Cichos, Fargo; two sisters ?
