Corine Kay Kartes, 73, of Dickey ND passed away on October 5, 2026, surrounded by people she loved: her children; daughter-in-law, Chrissy; son-in-law, Allan; grandchildren Seri and Sawyer; and her close friend, Rose Barnick.
Corine was born May 29, 1953, in Jamestown ND, to Gloria Carpenter and the late Lawrence Carpenter. She graduated from Marion High School in 1971. On June 24, 1972, she married Mark Kartes in Dickey, beginning 42 years of marriage and a life they built together.
Mark and Corine owned and operated Kartes Kattle while raising their four children. Corine largely worked from home during those years, keeping up with four kids and everything that came with farm and family life. Later, she began working at Hugo’s in Jamestown, where she remained until 2013, when Mark was diagnosed with cancer. Her time at Hugo’s brought many friendships into her life, and long after she stopped working there, she continued to meet those friends for lunches filled with conversation and plenty of laughs.
Corine was also an active member of Assumption Catholic Church in Dickey.
To know Corine was to know someone who was spunky, fabulous and completely herself. She loved life, loved an adventure and rarely passed up a chance to have some fun. She traveled extensively, including motorcycle adventures with her sister Michelle, and loved telling stories from trips to Ireland, Bulgaria, Romania, Australia, New Zealand, Denmark, Germany and countless places across the United States. Arizona also became a special place for her, where she enjoyed spending part of her winters.
But of all the places she went and things she did, some of Corine's greatest joy came from being a grandmother. She adored Sophie Hansen, Brody Erickson, Amalie Stalker, Seri Kartes, Sawyer Kartes and Hazel King and was incredibly proud of each of them. She had a special bond with her grandchildren and took her role as the fun grandma very seriously. With Corine's spunky personality, that wasn't particularly difficult. She loved making memories with them, laughing with them and being part of their lives.
Corine was kind, generous and caring, but she was also strong, independent and never afraid to speak her mind. She knew who she was and stood up for the people she loved. It was part of what made Corine, Corine, and part of why she will be so deeply missed.
Corine is survived by her four children, Stacie Kartes (Erik Hansen) of Redmond WA; Mandy Kartes (Allan Erickson) of West Fargo; Steven Kartes (Chrissy) of Dickey; and Laine Kartes of Berwyn IL; her mother, Gloria Carpenter of Dickey; and her grandchildren, Sophie Hansen Brody Erickson, Amalie Stalker, Seri Kartes, Sawyer Kartes and Hazel King.
She is also survived by her siblings, Larry Carpenter, Michelle Carpenter, David Carpenter, Susan Scherf, Jeff Carpenter, Melissa Godlewski and Jeannette Nutter. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mark, and her father, Lawrence.
A vigil will be held at 7:00 p.m. Friday, October 9, at Eddy Funeral Home in Jamestown, with visitation beginning at 6:00 p.m.
A celebration of Corine's life will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, October 10, at Assumption Catholic Church in Dickey, with Father Miller officiating. Lunch will follow at the Dickey Town Hall. A sunset burial will take place at 6:30 PM at Assumption Catholic Cemetery in Dickey.
In honor of Corine's love of nature, those attending her funeral are invited to bring a flower to place along the aisle, creating a beautiful final tribute to a woman who brought so much color and personality to the lives around her. For those who would prefer to give a memorial, the family plans to use contributions to plant trees in Corine’s memory around her home in Dickey.
