Cecilia Newton, 94, of Jamestown, ND, passed away peacefully Wednesday afternoon, January 7th, 2026, at SMP Health – Ave Marie.
Cecilia was born on the family farm December 16th, 1931, near Windsor, ND. She was the fourth out of the sixteen children born to Paul and Veronica (Prodzinski) Wanzek of Windsor, ND. She went to country school in Moonlake Township and then to St. John’s Academy in Jamestown and graduated in 1949.
After graduation, she worked at Trinity Hospital in the nursery until it closed, moving on to work at the Jamestown Sun Office for many years. After that, she did house cleaning for many families until retirement at the age of eighty.
She met the love of her life, Harvey Newton, and they were married on November 25, 1954, at St. Mattias Catholic Church in Windsor, ND. They made their home in Jamestown and celebrated sixty-seven years of marriage before his passing in 2022.
Cele loved cooking and baking and was especially well known for her candy and cookie making skills. She also crocheted and made many afghans. Family was a very important part of her life, and she cherished time spent with those she loved. They loved to travel to concerts and loved dancing to big band jazz music. They also made many trips to Las Vegas, which they enjoyed. She also loved music—playing the organ and player piano.
Cecilia is survived by her three children: Tom (Jo Lynn) Newton of Bismarck, Terri (Bill) Koch of Fargo, and Tim Newton of Jamestown. She is also survived by her nine grandchildren: Christopher, Cassie (Brent), Nick, Cody, Jaimie (Evan), Alexis, Tyler, Zach, and Abigail; and three great-grandchildren: Braden, Cecilia, and Octavia.
She is also survived by six siblings: Gene (Beth) Wanzek of Windsor, Genny (Keith) Berg of Fargo, Judy Baenen of Lead, SD, Tony Wanzek of Jamestown, Cathy (Gary) Carlson of Jamestown, and Connie Charipar of Minneapolis, MN; and so many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, four brothers—Raphael, Leonard, Kenny, and David Wanzek—and five sisters—Joyce Gutensohn, Delores Norris, Joan Cysewski, Therese Solinger, and Louise Wanzek.
The Newton family would like to thank Ave Marie and JRMC Hospice for the great care she received, and Audrey Thornton for taking care of Cele’s hair for forty-three years.
Cele, you will always be in our hearts and forever missed. We all love you so much and are very thankful for all you’ve done for us.
