On August 22, 2010, the Lord brought home Carolyn Rae Hook Phillips, Jamestown, North Dakota. Carolyn was formerly of Sierra Vista and Surprise, AZ, Lake Mina, Aberdeen and Arlington, South Dakota.
Carolyn Rae Hook was born January 7, 1928 to Benjamin Mandred and Rena Waldron Hook at Arlington, SD. She attended school in Arlington graduating from high school in 1947. In high school, she worked at the Arlington Theater, running Mr. Abbott's Popcorn Machine. She attended General Beadle College in Madison, SD for one year. In 1948, she began working at N.W. Bell Telephone Company as a Clerk in Arlington's office. On October 3, 1948, Carolyn married the love of her life who was the lifetime friend of her brother and neighbor, Alan Merle Phillips. To that marriage was born three children, Douglas Alan; Betsy Kay; and Cheryl Ann.
Carolyn devoted her life to caring for her family. She was known for her richness of spirit, inner strength and her love of and sacrifice for her family. The Lord served as her core and foundation and she was the core and foundation of her family. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Arlington, Sioux Falls, and Aberdeen; she was a 50+ year member of the Arlington Eastern Star Chapter; and a member of Daughters of the American Revolution in Benson, Arizona.
Carolyn lived in Huron, Watertown, Aberdeen and Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The majority of those years were spent in Aberdeen where Carolyn enjoyed knitting, traveling and playing various games with her friends and family. Carolyn worked part-time as a telephone surveyor. Later, she volunteered at Dakota Midland Hospital, working the Information Desk and Gift Shop for many years. In 1977, they moved to Sioux Falls, returning to Aberdeen/Lake Mina in 1979 when Alan retired in 1981.
Alan and Carolyn traveled all 50 states finally settling in Sun City West, Arizona and then in Surprise, Arizona, where Alan passed away in 1997. After two courageous battles with cancer, Carolyn lived in Sierra Vista, Arizona and Jamestown, North Dakota.
Survivors include her 3 children and in-laws: Douglas and Marlene Rydberg Phillips of Sierra Vista, AZ, Michael and Betsy Phillips Jones, Saint David, AZ, and Richard and Cheryl Phillips Burroughs, Jamestown, ND; one sister, Constance (Connie) Hook Tinker, Pierre, SD; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren with one more on the way.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alan Merle Phillips; parents; and brother, Arthur (Pete) Benjamin Hook.
Casketbearers will be her grandchildren: Christopher Phillips, Angela Phillips Burnett, Bryan Jones, David Burroughs, Kristin Burroughs Hayes-Streed, Daniel Phillips, and honoraary casketbearer granddaughter, Tracy Burroughs Storsteen.
The ushers will be great-granddaughters, Rylee Ann Hayes, Lauree Hook Benson, and Courtney Streed.
