Bernadetta Brandenburg

July 12, 1918 — April 12, 2015

Bernadetta “Bernie” Brandenburg, 96, of Edgeley, ND, died Sunday morning, April 12, 2015 at Sanford St. Vincent’s Care Community, Bismarck, ND.

Bernadetta Hurley was born on July 12, 1918, on the family farm in Deisem, ND, the daughter of Joe and Iva (Conley) Hurley. She was raised on the family farm and attended school in Edgeley, graduating from Edgeley High School in 1936. To this day, she proudly wore her EHS class ring. She attended Hilde Business School in Jamestown and then worked at the FSA Office in Napoleon, ND, as a junior clerk typist. Later, Bernie worked at the Auditor’s Office at the LaMoure County Courthouse from 1939 to 1942. On December 20, 1941, she married Walter Brandenburg at the Catholic Church in Verona, ND. Bernie and Wally purchased land in Ray Township in 1945, built new buildings on that farm site, and lived there for 40 years, retiring from farming in 1979. In December of 1985, they moved into Edgeley in a new home. They took a lot of pride in maintaining their home, inside and out. In May of 2011, Bernie and Wally moved to the Manor St. Joseph in Edgeley. Wally passed away on July 12, 2011. Bernie continued living at the Manor until April of 2012, when she moved to Bismarck and lived there until the time of her death.

In her earlier years, Bernie was involved in the Catholic Altar Society, was an avid bowler, enjoyed fishing trips with Wally, especially to Waterhen, Canada, and played cards (especially Shoot the Moon) with their many friends in Edgeley. Bernie and Wally went basically everywhere together, being married for nearly 70 years. She was very proud of her 100% Irish heritage and in her later years, she still maintained her sense of humor, wit, and occasional winks to make sure you were listening.

Bernie is survived by her two daughters, Colleen (Jim) Gaikowski, Andover, MN and Gail (Jay) Snustad, Bismarck, ND; five grandchildren: Carmen (Steve) Krumenauer, Otsego, MN; Jim Gaikowski, Jr., Otsego, MN; Patti (Adam) DeRosier, Brooklyn Park, MN; Kari (Brian) Krohmer, Golden Valley, MN; Joe (Brittany) Snustad, Bismarck, ND; six+ great grandchildren, Alex, Jake, and Carlie Krumenauer, Kayden, Sophie, and Gabby Snustad, baby DeRosier due in June; nephew, Tom Zundel, Jamestown; one sister-in-law, Rella Brandenburg, College Place, Washington; and many Brandenburg nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Walter; sister, Luella Zundel; and a nephew, Terry Zundel.
