Agnes Witt, 96, a Jamestown, ND resident for 76 years died Saturday, March 7, 2020, at the Eventide nursing home.
Agnes Mae Witt was born December 16, 1923, to Roscoe and Mary (Krcma) Reed of Palmero, ND. She was a valedictorian of the Palmero High School class of 1941, and continued her education at Walla Walla College in Walla Walla Washington for preparation of becoming a secretary. Her secretarial skills served her well for 71 years working for the Dakota Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, Register of Deeds, Jamestown College, R.E. Meidinger, and JKU Properties of Valley City. It was only after falling and breaking her hip at age 90 that she was forced to quit working.
Agnes and Irving G. Witt were married July 27, 1946. He passed away in 1965.
Agnes had no children but was shown much love by her nieces, nephews, and neighborhood kids. Her memorable yearly bus trips to Montana to see nephew Pete Reed and his wife Carol ended only when she entered the home. Because Pete and Carol ran a bed & breakfast, Agnes was able to meet many of their guests from the United States and foreign countries. For the last 5 years Pete and Carol came to ND to help her celebrate her birthday . . . . always bringing a BIG cake to share with residents and the help. Getting mail and visits from relatives and friends made her day. Nephew Lowell Reed’s LONG letters always brought many smiles as they were read to her. Agnes had such fond memories of niece Michelle Hollingsworth’s visits with her dog, Lucy. Agnes made sure to save carmel corn from bingo to share with Lucy. Whenever nephew Lynn Brost was in Jamestown, his to-do list included visiting Aunt Agnes.
Even though Agnes was confined to a wheelchair that didn’t keep her from taking part in every activity possible-bingo, folding towels, birthday parties, different entertainment by folks from the community, and balloon volley ball (her very favorite thing). When Agnes entered the home, that was her home. Her attitude is something we could all emulate.
Agnes was a member of the Jamestown Seventh-day Adventist Church where she held the offices of Sabbath School Superintendent, treasurer, and clerk for many years. She continued to attend church even after she entered the care center.
Agnes was happiest when she was with people so being active in Credit Women’s Club, Homemakers, Birthday Club, and a domino group was important to her.
Agnes was a friend’s friend as evident by the number of people that possess a variety of things she crocheted with loving care. Agnes is survived by many nieces and nephews, and friends. She will be missed.
Her husband, parents, five brothers and sisters, and step-daughter preceded her in death.
Visitation will be one hour before the service. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, March 12, 2020 at Jamestown Seventh-day Adventist Church, Jamestown, ND with Pastor Peter Simpson officiating. Interment at Highland Home Cemetery in the spring.
