Agnes Austin, 92, Jamestown, ND passed away Thursday, December 29, 2016 at Eventide Jamestown.
Agnes Austin was born October 24, 1924 at a farm southeast of Edgeley, ND the daughter of Glenn and Nettie Mae (Turney) Austin. She grew up and attended grade school at Willowbrook #2, one mile from the family farm. Agnes attended high school in Edgeley, graduating in May 1942. After graduating, she attended the State Normal and Industrial School in Ellendale, ND for one year and a summer, achieving a 60 hour teaching certificate in July 1943. She began her career of teaching in the one-room county school at Banner #3, near Adrian, ND. After one year there, she taught in Russell township, near Adrian, for one year then returned to Banner #3 for two more years. Agnes attended school between school terms until she got her Standard Certificate. From September 1947 until May 1950, she taught grades 1 though 4 in Millarton, ND. Agnes later taught grades 1 & 2 in Wimbledon, ND, during which time she attained her Master's degree from Ellendale State Normal School and Valley City State Teachers College. In the fall of 1952, she began teaching at the Anne Carlsen School for Children in Jamestown. Agnes taught 35 years there. In 1954, she took time to attended Winnipeg Bible Institute in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada for one year.
No matter where she taught, her pupils were her pride and joy. She still hears and talks to many of them, far and near.
After retiring from teaching, she was a caregiver for Dr. Joseph Sorkness, near where she lived on Meadowlark Lane in Jamestown, until his death in 1998.
In her spare time she learned to crochet, mostly afghans, which she gave to her students and friends.
Agnes was treasurer of Beulah Camp (Fuller Family Camp) and State Treasurer of the North Dakota Auxiliary with World Gospel Mission in Marion, Indiana. Also, she was president of the local prayer band group with World Gospel Mission.
Agnes did a little traveling with her friend Eulalia Evert to Texas, Indiana, bus tours, and you name it.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Steward and Eugene Austin, two sisters, Janette Gunderson, Elizabeth Rothwell and a special friend Eulalia Evert.
Funeral Service: 2:30 PM, Wednesday, January 4, 2017 at G.L. Riffe Chapel, Eventide Jamestown, ND.
Visitation: one hour before service at Eventide.
Spring Burial: Mt. Hope Cemetery, Edgeley, ND
