Abner Mitchell

Abner Richard Mitchell, 72, Courtenay, North Dakota, died Sunday, October 26, 2008 at the Carrington Health Center in Carrington, ND.

Mr. Mitchell was born May 1, 1936 in Courtenay, ND, the son of Bryan and Jessie (Hoyt) Mitchell. He grew up in Courtenay and graduated from Courtenay High School in 1954. He joined the US Navy on September 10, 1954 and served his country for four years. Upon his honorable discharge on July 18, 1958 he returned to North Dakota. On January 30, 1960 Abner married Judith Moore in Ellendale, ND. He farmed and ranched with his father and later with his sons in the Courtenay and Pettibone, North Dakota area. They also did custom combining for 24 years.

Abner's hobbies included hunting, fishing, livestock sales, sports, and of course, a good game of Pinochle, Whist or Golf. He enjoyed a hot cup of coffee with his friends and a good political discussion.

Abner is survived by his wife, Judith, of Courtenay; one daughter, Andrea (Tim) Muggli, Carson, ND; three sons, Jeffrey (Tami) Mitchell, Courtenay, Stewart (Ann) Mitchell, Pettibone, ND, and Keith (Tressi) Mitchell, Jamestown; seven grandchildren; his mother, Jessie Mitchell, Carrington; one brother, Douglas (Adeline) Mitchell, Jamestown; brother-in-law, William Monson, Minnesota; one niece and four nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father and one sister, Anita Monson.

Memorial Service: 7:00 PM, Wednesday, November 5, 2008 at the Eddy Funeral Chapel, Jamestown, with Pastor Bryce Tahran officiating.

Visitation: None scheduled.

Burial: Courtenay Cemetery, Courtenay, ND, at a later date.
