Roger S. Smith

Roger S. Smith, 86, Jamestown, ND died Monday, February 18, 2013 at Eventide at Hi-Acres in Jamestown.

Roger was born April 18, 1926 near Buchanan, ND, the son of Carl and Stella (Porter) Smith. He graduated from Glenwood High School, Glenwood City, WI. After high school he entered the US Navy (1943-1947), where he served in the Pacific Theatre and was awarded five campaign stars. After the war he was a member of the ND National Guard and served in Korea with the 2nd Infantry Division. He received the combat infantry badge and two campaign stars. He then attended and graduated from Dickinson State College in 1953 with a BS in Secondary Education. On October 24, 1953 Roger married Betty Stradinger of Dickinson, ND. After graduation he taught school in Medora, New Rockford, Hebron, Hazen and Golden Valley. From 1959 to 1983 he taught social studies for Jamestown Public Schools. After retiring from teaching he took to his life love of farming by helping his farmer friends in the area.

Roger was a member of the VFW 760, Cooties Pup Tent 6, American Legion and the 40 and 8 Club. Roger also organized the ND Korean Veterans Reunion, which has been held in Jamestown for the past 23 years. He was awarded for his dedicated service to the Korean War Veterans of ND. He also served several offices in the VFW at the state and local levels.

Roger is survived by his wife, Betty, Jamestown; four children, Bruce Smith, Seattle, WA, Cindy (Ivars) Wagner, Onamia, MN, Gary (Carol) Smith, Monticello, MN and Tammy (Tom) Weber, Fargo, ND; five grandchildren, Mike (Robyn) Dunn, Jessica (Ben) Bouta, Lindsay Smith, Hannah and Kali Weber; two great-grandchildren, Elle and Brianna Dunn and his two dogs, Peanuts and Ringo.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Duane and Robert.

The family would like to thank Eventide at Hi-Acres and Hospice of the Red River Valley for the loving care they provided.
