Mavis Maxine Kortie was born July 28, 1920 in Lisbon, ND to Norman Kortie and Lee (Tiedeman) Kortie. She passed away at Ave Marie Village March 23, 2009.
Mavis went to elementary school in Verona, ND and graduated from Edgeley High School June 7, 1938. She married Christopher John Soulis on July 30, 1941. Her husband Chris ""C.J."" and his father, John ""Pappy"" Soulis ran the Majestic Recreation in Jamestown.
She was the beloved mother of two sons, Brent Norman Soulis and Monty Kim Soulis.
During WWII Mavis worked at Douglas Aircraft in Chicago as a keypunch operator. She was a volunteer at Jamestown Hospital and sometimes worked at the Frontier Village as a schoolteacher at their one room school building.
Mavis was very artistic her whole life and made banners for occasions at St. John?s Lutheran Church and worked at the Farmers Union where she made sketches for their newsletters. She had beautiful handwriting and penned many letters and cards to friends and family using the old fashioned ink well pens.
She belonged to several Women?s Bowling Leagues and was fast friends with the Malinski girls Helen, Deloris, Ester and Judy. They had many good times together on bowling trips, picnics and holidays and were a hoot when they?d dress up for Halloween.
Mavis loved to have get-togethers for coffee at her home and in spite of her complaints about her small kitchen, always took pride in setting a wonderful table decoration.
She helped dentist Loren Waxler and his wife Lorraine with volunteer work during trips to Guatemala and Haiti and tried to learn Spanish in later life which was quite a challenge for her.
In later life mom volunteered at the Washington School for school teacher Jane Kamletz?s classroom where she assisted the children with their reading skills. She became very good friends with Jane and her husband Richard and as a result have become wonderful friends to the family as well.
Mavis K. Soulis was preceded in death by her mother Lee and father Norman, Husband Chris J Soulis, brother-in-law John (Jake) Soulis, and nephew Charles (Chuck) N. Harr
