David was born on December 14, 1959, the first of six children to Vernon (Red) and Joyce (Vellenga) Nienow at Trinity Hospital, Jamestown, ND. He grew up on the family farm northwest of Streeter, ND. David graduated from Streeter High School in 1978. On May 28, 1982, David married Debra (Debbie) Christensen in Medina, ND. They later welcomed two sons, Shane, in 1987 and Nathan, in 1992. David and Debbie became joyful grandparents to Gracie in 2012 and Jaxon in 2014.
While in high school David worked for several farmers in the Streeter area. After graduation, he began working in construction where he found his passion for operating heavy equipment. David and Debbie farmed for several years before moving to Streeter where David worked at an auto shop. They moved to Jamestown briefly and then to Kensal when David ran the county road maintainer for the area. David served on the Kensal school board for several years. David started his dream job running bulldozer at the Falkirk Mine in Underwood in 2010. He loved his job and was very proud of his work there. David made many friends while there and was known by the nickname "Streeter".
David enjoyed hunting and fishing throughout his whole life. He passed his love of these sports onto Shane and Nathan. David was known for his wonderful full laugh and joy of visiting. He was always willing to help others whether it was fixing a vehicle or cleaning snow from a driveway. Even when David was ill, his first concern was for how others were doing. He was blessed with wonderful family and friends throughout his life. The impact that David had on lives of others was very evident during his cancer battle.
David was diagnosed with a glioblastoma brain tumor in January 2015. David underwent several treatments to battle his cancer.
David is survived by his wife Debbie, sons Shane and Nathan (Lexi McDonald), and grandchildren Gracie and Jaxon, his parents Vernon and Joyce, siblings Carolyn (John) Phelps, Jim Nienow, Beth (Mike Hamer), Amy (Brad) Roesler, and Sarah (Kyle) Miller, sisters and brothers in law, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents, mother-in-law and father-in-law Agnes and Clarence Christensen, and many family and friends.
