Richard Carlson Obituary

It is with great sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Richard Ivan Carlson. He passed away on January 9, 2024 at his home surrounded by his family.

Richard was born on June 29th, 1946 to Ivan and Ann (Hinz) Carlson in Jamestown, ND. He was the eldest of the four Carlson children. He attended a one room school in Winfield township and graduated from Jamestown High School.

Richard married Lori Hoy on June 18, 1977. They have spent their entire married life on the farm in Winfield township. They have one child, Derek, who has farmed with his father since 2012.

Richard had a lifelong passion for farming, sports, and AM radio. He also gained significant enjoyment from simple everyday interaction with family, friends, and complete strangers.

Richard started farming straight out of high school with his father, then with his brother Russell, and finishing his career with his son Derek. Richard continued to farm until late October when his health no longer allowed him to be in the combine.

Richard loved playing softball. He enjoyed hitting home runs, making a run saving play at home plate, and meeting fellow softball enthusiasts at tournaments around the state. Richard would have played softball forever if Lori hadn’t “encouraged” him to retire when he turned 64.

Friends and neighbors will tell you that Richard was hardly ever seen without a radio next to his ear or in his shirt pocket. Everyone got to “enjoy” whatever he was listening to.

Richard loved to travel with his wife Lori. He found pleasure in visiting with people and learning about them. He enjoyed the all you can eat buffets aboard cruise ships.

Richard is survived by his wife Lori of 46 years, his son Derek (Lynda) Carlson and grandchildren Tara and Logan Carlson. Also surviving is his best friend, business partner, and brother Russell Carlson of rural Jamestown, sisters Bernice (Roger) Anderson, Drayton, and Lorraine (Lee) Wahlund, Carrington, nieces, nephews, and mother-in-law Nancy Hoy, Morris, MN.

Richard passed away peacefully 29 days after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer that had metastasized throughout his body. We are grateful for Richard’s 77 plus years that he was with us.

Richard’s family will be receiving friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Thursday, January 18, 2024 at Eddy Funeral Home.  Richard’s funeral will take place on January 19, 2024 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Jamestown at 10:00 AM. Interment to follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Jamestown.
